HOUSE OF BALANCE

A Gut Remodel of a 1922 home in Piedmont, California. Interior Architecture, finishes, furnishings for interiors and outdoor areas

A HOUSE OF BALANCE

A tech professional and his family relocated from Seattle with the goal of creating a quintessential California lifestyle within a classic Mediterranean home in Piedmont. The project involved a full gut renovation, introducing new cabinetry, electrical systems, plumbing, tile, stair railings, and finishes, while carefully preserving the home’s original trim, windows, and doors.

The interiors are defined by a fresh, layered palette of blues, golds, yellows, cranberries, and plums, bringing warmth and vibrancy to the traditional architecture. The kitchen is filled with natural light, with French doors and windows on three sides overlooking the garden and outdoor deck. A custom off-white lacquer hood with nickel straps was designed to pair seamlessly with Urban Electric light fixtures. Bright yellows and golds provide contrast to the off-white cabinetry and tile, grounded by a deep eggplant contemporary rug by Erik Lindstrom.

The dining room is energized by an ethereal digital mural grass cloth from Phillip Jeffries and a gold starburst globe fixture suspended above a whitewashed oval table. In the living room, symmetry and warmth take center stage, where a honey-toned wool rug anchors plum-patterned armchairs and a pair of casual walnut coffee tables from de la Espada. The focal point of the room is a custom warm-wood fireplace surround flanked on either side by blue grasscloth-covered walls.

On the second floor, the laundry room stands out with Waterworks tile, an iridescent periwinkle vinyl wall covering from Aux Abris, and an Ann Sacks pale green and blue patterned porcelain floor.

Outdoor spaces were developed in collaboration with landscape architect David Thorne and feature custom fireclay tile at the pool, jacuzzi, and arched wall. Furnishings and umbrellas from Santa Barbara Designs, Potocco, and Harbour Outdoor complete the exterior environments.

The result is a home that bridges traditional Mediterranean architecture with a contemporary California sensibility—colorful, layered, and designed for modern family living.
